Prayer

Dear me,

I saw your bright brown eyes last night

Age 8

I remember that sweater that headband

They sat you on that chair

Told you how to tilt your head

Where to look

How to smile

They told you how to be

Perfect.. exactly like that!

Dear me,

I just saw you in the bathroom mirror and I cried

Are you still sitting at that chair

Wearing eight year-old words around your neck

Dear me,

We’re grown-ups now

Age 41

I reach out to hold your hand

But

You stand so tall with bright brown eyes

No headband,

Just long sleek hair

No one can sit you down

Now you decide

Dear me,

We’ve made it

Your voice doesn’t shake

Your truth is strong

Those bright brown eyes

Are free to smile!
